Wells can provide safe, reliable sources of water for families and businesses not serviced by a large public drinking water system or trucked delivery. Programs exist to help homeowners finance well construction.
Materials are available to help homeowners decide if a well is right for them, and to plan and manage their drinking water system.
Proper location and construction of a well are important. A useful reference is the Guidelines for Water Well Construction available in print copy from Environmental Health Services.
Managing a well requires regular monitoring and maintenance. Routine testing for bacteriological and chemical water quality is recommended to check on the safety of well water. Recommendations on frequency of testing and other relevant information can be found in the publication, Getting Your Drinking Water Tested available from Environmental Health Services (PDF, 103 KB).
Environmental Health Services provides an accredited water quality laboratory for testing total coliforms and E. coli at no cost for analysis to drinking water operators and private owners.
